Ansmann Batteries – a professional solution to your rechargable needs…

I thought it worthwhile to share a recent customer experience I received from Ansmann.

Like a lot of you out there I use rechargable batteries and have done for years. After many successful years of using Uniross products (and a couple of bad expereinces with both duracell and Ever Ready) I spent some time looking for the best solution to this continually demandnig area of photographic equipment…

After much deliberating I purchased an Ansmann Digispeed4 Ultra charger complete with 4 x 2850mAh batteries. I can’t quite remember the exact cost but it was definitely a step up from the normal high street offerings.

The batteries themselves seem to last forever! About a month ago I shot a wedding complete with evening coverage. Normally I would expect to change my trusted Uniross batteries at least twice if not three times. However, I shot the whole day and evening with the Ansmann batteries without any loss of charge or performance.

But the icing on the cake was my recent customer experience with them. My charger became faulty and ceased to function. Expecting the normal ‘jumping through hoops’ that now seems to be standard practise with companies after-sales support departments, I was amazed at their service. I received an e-mail as soon as they received the unit to confirm safe delivery. The next day I received an e-mail to say a replacement unit was to be sent out and the following day it duly arrived complete with a new set of batteries in the blister pack and a covering letter explaining the fault.

As a professional photographer who relies on his equipment for his living, this is the sort of service I expect from professional companies and Jeff Tarling at Ansmann certainly delivered that and then some. Well done and a big ‘Thank you’ for that!

So if you’re considering investing in new rechargeable batteries, give Ansmann careful consideration – they won’t be the cheapest but investments never are 🙂

All the best and thanks for reading

Yateley May Fayre

A quick post of some of the pictures from this years Yateley May Fayre.

A great event on the village green enjoyed by all bathing in glorious sunshine, even though it was just a tad on the breezy side.

It makes me realise just how fortunate I am to live in such a great place 🙂

Enjoy the photos and I hope you like what I’ve done to them…

Spring Close Up

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In my last post I was extolling the virtues of Spring, so after a long bike ride yesterday where I stumbled accross some late bluebells, I went back with my camera and macro lens to get some nice close ups.

Macro photography is not my normal discipline as I’m normally busy doing wedding photography, portrait photography or corporate headshots, but this proved to be a very relaxed alternative. Parked safely up on a country lane with virtually no traffic, radio 4 on in the back ground and plenty of time, I got down to some nature shots…

Using my sigma macro lens (my only non- Nikon lens) I got down on the floor and in amongst the vegetation to get the optimum angles. This did bring some strange looks from the occassional cyclist passing by, but sometimes you have to get a bit dirty and you definitely have to get in some strange positions to get that best shot. In fact, this reminds me of the best tip I ever heard regarding photography and that is: “The best bit of equipment you can have in your photographic armour is your feet – so use them!” With the advent of modern cameras and zoom lenses, it becomes common for people just to stand in one place and zoom in and out to frame the shot as they want. There’s so much more to it than that! By moving around to get the optimum background and framing opportunities, you can change an average shot into a great shot! So give it a go 🙂

I hope you enjoy the shots in the slideshow. I was even lucky enough to get a couple of wildlife shots in there as well, with a very active ant on the new baby ferns and also a fly on the white flowers giving a very nice contrast. There’s also some nice horse chestnut blossom thrown in as well as I can’t resisit high contrast/saturated shots – it’s a throw back to the good old days of Fuji Velvia 50 😉

Be inspired, have some time out and enjoy what’s around you….

Anna & Nick’s Wedding

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It was such a priviledge to be involved in the wedding of Nick & Anna just a couple of weeks ago. They were married at St Peter’s Church in Yateley with the reception at Loseley Hall just outside Guildford.

It was a fantastic fun filled day if not a little cold!

Anna’s home provided a wonderful rustic setting for many of the ‘getting ready’ photos.

Anna looked divine in a long trained dress and accompanied with the most beautiful bouquet…

Loseley Hall provided a great setting for their wedding photographs, some of which are shown here but many more can be viewed on picasa at:  https://picasaweb.google.com/odysseyphotographic/AnnaNickSWedding#

Branching out into the blogosphere!

Well, here we are with my new blog. I intend to blog about fun commissions, interesting shoots and beautiful weddings I’ve worked on (with the client’s permission, of course!)

I work nationally for private, commercial and corporate photography commissions and I also work on private projects when I get the time, so I’m hoping I’ll have plenty to blog about. More importantly, I’m hoping you’ll find my posts interesting and informative.

I’ve been a photographer for a long time now and have seen plenty of changes in the industry, and this blog will also be a place for me to comment on industry developments.

If there’s anything you’d like me to address on the blog, please let me know. You can comment here or catch me on Twitter.

Until then….

Odyssey Photographic preferred supplier to Riverdale Barn Yateley

Preferred supplier to Riverdale Barn, Yateley

I’m really pleased to have been included on the preffered suppliers list to Rivervale Barn wedding venue in Yateley. John and Moyra’s venue is a beautiful building constucted in traditional style using natural materials. Built out of original oak, it has under floor heating and, most impressively, an adjoining bedroom for the exclusive use of the bride and groom. Are you thinking of getting married at Rivervale Barn? I hope to see you there!

Choosing the right wedding photographer

Tomorrow, Odyssey Photographic will be exhibiting at a wedding Fair in Woking. It’s the time of year when brides (and grooms!) are starting to plan in earnest, so I thought it would be a good time to give you my advice – from behind the camera – about what to look for in a wedding photographer.

So what are the important factors when people look for a photographer?

Well, surprisingly, it’s not all about the pictures! The photos should almost be taken for granted. You’re booking someone to photograph your wedding, you’d expect them to have professional qualifications, a portfolio with examples of previous work, testimonials from previous clients, professional insurance, multiple cameras, flash guns, batteries etc.  All these factors should be expected and anything less should ring alarm bells.

No, what you should really look for is the potential relationship between you and them. Your wedding photographer will play a big part of your day and you will probably spend more time with them than some of your guests – it is essential that there is a great relationship and that you feel completely comfortable and at ease with them…

A good wedding photographer will
– keep you at ease
– be punctual and ensure all the day runs on time
– most importantly, they will have you in the right place at the right time

Remember, it’s your wedding day, not a photo shoot and it is important that the photographer always has this in mind and keeps you as the priority of the day.

By ensuring your day runs smoothly, you will always be at ease and by keeping you at your ease, your photographer should never have to say ‘smile!’  Only by keeping your day fun, comfortable and ticking along, can we as photographers get the best pictures –  relaxed, natural and perfectly you! – just as they should be.

You then get wonderful photos of a fantsatic day presented in a beautiful album to cherish for the rest of your life…

Don’t take a chance on the only opportunity to capture your perfect day, book a proven professional and enjoy your day for the rest of lives…
